 Towage of the car with refused АТ should be made with a speed not above 50 km/h (30 miles/ch) and on distance no more than 80 km (50 miles)!


The given Chapter is devoted automatic transmission (АТ). The information on РКПП is resulted to the Head the Manual box and differential.

In view of complexity of design АТ, absence on free sale of necessary replaceable internal components and necessity of use of the special equipment, composers of the present Management do not recommend to owners of cars to carry out major repairs АТ independently. Repair АТ in the conditions of a car-care centre workshop is enough expensive operation, in a kind of that, it is necessary to consider alternative variants of replacement of the failed block new or restored. Any helpful information on repair and transmission replacement can be received on company Subaru car repair shops.

Without dependence from the chosen way of introduction refused АТ in action, independent performance of its removal and installation expenses (before make sure that transmission really requires regenerative repair) will help to cut down substantially.

In the present Chapter procedures of diagnostics of general refusals АТ, its routine maintenance, the basic adjustments, removal and installation are considered only. The scheme of an arrangement of transmission in an impellent compartment is presented on an illustration.

Considered models of cars are supplied with one of two types АТ. The first type is intended for a complete set of models without system of adjustable distribution of a twisting moment (VTD), called also by models MPT (models with multidisk transfer). Other type is established on model with VTD. Both types АТ have a design of a constant drive on all wheels, uniting in themselves, hydrotransformer/coupling section, section of a terminal reducer, and also трансмиссионную and distributing sections.

Transmissions of both types

Electronic control by transmissions of both types carries out the special module called by the module of management by transmission (TCM). TCM represents the microprocessor assemblage supervising functioning of operating electromagnetic valves and other electric and electrohydraulic devices taking into account influence of many entering variables (degree of opening throttle заслонки, speed of movement of the car, the engine turns, chosen range АТ etc.). On the basis of the analysis of arriving information TCM carries out a choice of optimum transfer for current conditions and defines the most suitable scheme of distribution of capacity (including braking by the engine and blocking of inclusion of coupling).

Except described above, TCM carries out additional function of an automatic choice of one of two control modes: "Base" (Base) and a mode «Raised capacity of return» (Power). The choice carries out according to a manner of driving of the driver which TCM defines proceeding character of management of a gas pedal. Usually base mode is used at movement on equal road while the most typical conditions of activation of a mode «Power» are sharp accelerations and movement uphill.

One more feature of considered transmissions is possibility of realisation of manual deduction АТ on the chosen transfer, - at correct use the given function allows to achieve increase of controllability of a vehicle and comfort of movement.

Efficiency of transfer of capacity, and economy of the expense of fuel are reached at the expense of use of the converter of rotation with hydraulic blocking муфтой and applications редукторной assemblages with two complete sets of the planetary mechanisms, providing possibility of a choice of four lobbies and one back transfers.

Structure TCM includes the self-diagnostics block that appreciably raises reliability of functioning of transmission and facilitates search of causes of failures.

Transmission of type MPT

Design АТ of MRT-MODELS is presented on an illustration.

In the given design are used both structural, and operating means of maintenance of absence of stress of switchings. Обгонная муфта and three accumulators effectively absorb pushes while completely electronic control by switching of forward transfers in a combination to the pressure control in lines and management of hydrotransformer blocking is minimised by probability of pushes and jerks at transmission switchings.

The raised durability картера АТ in a combination to application of double-thread cable of the mechanism of a gear change poorly transferring to vibration, provides a low noise background of functioning of transmission.

The structure of assemblage АТ established on model МРТ, includes the hydraulic block of management of a drive of back wheels. The block is located in a back part трансмиссионной sections АТ and consists of the electromagnetic valve of the running cycle regulating hydraulic pressure, applied to operating a drive of back wheels муфте multidisk coupling of damp type.

In memory of the module of management transmission (TCM) stores a set of the parametres defining size transferred distributing муфтой of a twisting moment. Being based on the analysis of the data arriving from corresponding information gauges (speed of movement of the car, degree of opening throttle заслонки, chosen range АТ, proslipping of wheels, etc.), TCM chooses from memory suitable working factor of management of the electromagnetic valve regulating hydraulic pressure, put to distributing муфте, providing transfer of a corresponding twisting moment to a drive of back wheels of the car.

The accurate control of management of a drive of back wheels from outside TCM is especially effective at prevention of the undesirable braking moments arising at fulfilment of abrupt turns on small speed of movement.

At activation ABS the module of management provides with transmission increase of efficiency of braking by means of adjustment of transfer of a twisting moment on back wheels and the control of conformity to the chosen transfer of speed of movement.

Transmission of type VTD

Design АТ of VTD-models is presented on an illustration.

Completely automatic, operated electronics four-stage АТ, established on model VTD, has designation Е-4АТ. The interaxal differential given all-wheel drive (AWD) transmissions is equipped by system of distribution of capacity Subaru combining recently developed planetary reducer of mixed type with the mechanism operated electronics of restriction проскальзывания (LSD).

The interaxal differential distributes a twisting moment between forward and back wheels in the ratio 45.5: 54.5 thanks to ability of the mixed planetary reducer to twisting moment distribution. The given parity has been defined in a greater degree from reasons of increase of smoothness of passage of turns (that demands optimisation of distribution of forces of the lateral reaction arising between protectors and a road covering), than for the purpose of improvement of cohesive force of tyres (that demands optimisation of distribution of dynamic loadings). The dynamic control of change of a base parity is carried out thanks to application to the restriction mechanism проскальзывания differential. Adjustment is carried out in the range from defined by the transfer relation of planetary assemblage of base value to the value reached at the moment of a suspension of functioning of differential. Functioning of system of regulation of distribution of a twisting moment between forward and back wheels promotes increase of controllability of a vehicle, providing high stability of a course of the car even in extreme conditions.

At operation ABS TCM exercises administration of functioning of the device of restriction проскальзывания interaxal differential to similarly how the module of management of system of antiblocking of brakes supervises functioning of brake mechanisms.

Summarising told, it is possible to notice that transmissions Е-4АТ differ high stability of functioning and simplicity in operation.

Appointment of working ranges АТ

Position «Р»

Gets out at a car parking. In this position, in transmission all elements of management are switched off, and its target shaft is blocked, - car movement is impossible. To translate the selector in position «Р» follows only after a full stop of a vehicle. Attention: selector Transfer in position «Р» during movement can lead to a transmission exit out of operation!

Position «R»


Backing. To translate the selector in a position «R» it is possible only after a full stop of a vehicle. Attention: Inclusion of a reverse gear during car movement can lead to a transmission exit out of operation!

Position «N»


Neutral position. In a box all elements of management that provides absence of rigid kinematic communication between its conducting and conducted shaft are switched off. The mechanism of blocking of a target shaft is thus switched off, i.e. the car can freely move. It is not recommended to switch transmission in position «N» at movement накатом. Attention: At all do not switch off ignition at movement under a bias!

Position «D»


The basic mode of movement. Provides automatic switching with the first on the fourth transfer. It is recommended at movement in normal conditions.

Position «3»


Movement on first three transfers is authorised. It is recommended to use at movement on hilly road or in the conditions of frequent stops (an intense city cycle).

Position «2»


Movement only on the first and second transfers is authorised. It is recommended to use, for example, on twisting mountain roads. Switching on the third and fourth transfers is forbidden. On this range the mode of braking is effectively used by the engine.

Position «1»


Movement only on the first transfer is authorised. This range allows to realise as much as possible a mode of braking by the engine. It is recommended at movement on abrupt descents, liftings and impassability.
